How to Make Flowers Last Longer: 7 Bouquet Care Tips

Fresh flower bouquets

To make flowers last longer, trim the stems at an angle, put them in a clean vase with fresh water and flower food, remove leaves below the waterline, change the water every one to two days and keep the bouquet away from heat and aircon vents. With that routine, most bouquets stay fresh for five to ten days.

Our family has been arranging flowers for over 30 years, and these are the same habits we use in our own workroom. Here is the why and how behind each one, plus tips for specific flowers and for our warm, humid weather.

What should I do as soon as my bouquet arrives?

Get the flowers into water within an hour. Wrapped bouquets usually travel with a small water source, but it does not last long. Remove the wrapping, plastic and any rubber bands around the stems so air and water can reach them. Keep the ribbon if you like it, but loosen it around the stems.

7 tips to keep your bouquet fresh

1. Trim the stems at an angle

Cut 2 to 3 cm off each stem with a sharp knife or clean scissors, at a 45-degree angle. The angle gives the stem more surface to drink from and keeps it from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase. Trim again every time you change the water, because cut ends seal over within a day or two.

2. Use a clean vase

Bacteria in a dirty vase clog the stems so the flowers cannot drink, even when there is plenty of water. Wash the vase with dish soap and rinse it well before using it. A vase that looks clean but smells “off” is not clean.

3. Remove leaves below the waterline

Leaves sitting in water rot quickly, cloud the water and feed bacteria. Strip any leaf that would sit below the water level. Keep the leaves above it: they make the arrangement look fuller.

4. Add flower food

Flower food gives the blooms sugar for energy and keeps bacteria down. If you do not have a sachet, mix about a teaspoon of sugar and two or three drops of household bleach into a liter of water. The sugar feeds the flowers and the bleach keeps the water clear.

5. Change the water every one to two days

Fresh water is the single biggest factor in how long flowers last. Pour out the old water, rinse the vase, refill with cool water and trim the stems again. In hot weather, change it every day.

6. Keep them cool

Heat speeds up how fast flowers open and fade. Keep the vase out of direct sun and away from appliances that give off heat, like the TV or the refrigerator’s back. Aircon helps, but do not place flowers directly in front of the vent: the dry, cold blast dehydrates petals. Ripening fruit also releases a gas that makes flowers age faster, so keep the vase away from the fruit bowl.

7. Remove fading blooms

One wilting flower can shorten the life of the rest. Pull out spent blooms and yellowing leaves as soon as you see them, and the bouquet will keep looking fresh for days longer.

How do I keep flowers fresh in Philippine heat?

  • Put the vase in the coolest room of the house, especially overnight. A bedroom with aircon on low, away from the vent, is ideal.
  • Use cool, not cold, water, and change it daily during summer.
  • Avoid windowsills and car dashboards. Even an hour in a hot car can wilt a bouquet.
  • If you are bringing flowers to an event, keep them in water until the last minute.

How do I care for specific flowers?

FlowerSpecial careVase life (approx.)
RosesRemove guard petals that look bruised. If a head droops, recut the stem under water.5 to 7 days
SunflowersHeavy heads drink a lot. Use a tall, stable vase and top up water daily.6 to 10 days
TulipsThey keep growing and bend toward light. Turn the vase daily and trim to keep them upright.4 to 7 days
LiliesPull off the orange pollen as buds open. It stains clothes and shortens bloom life.7 to 14 days
HydrangeasThey drink through their petals too. Mist them, or submerge the head in cool water for 30 minutes if they wilt.4 to 7 days
GerberasUse shallow water, about 5 cm, since their soft stems rot easily.5 to 10 days
Carnations and baby’s breathVery hardy. Basic care keeps them going for a long time.7 to 14 days

Vase life depends on how fresh the flowers were when cut and how warm your home is. For more flower-by-flower advice, see our flower care guide and flower types.

Do coins, aspirin or soda really help?

Mostly no. A copper coin does very little. Aspirin may slightly lower the water’s pH, but flower food or the sugar and bleach mix works far better. Soda adds sugar but also makes the water cloudy, which feeds bacteria. Clean water, a clean vase and fresh cuts beat every hack.

What about chocolate bouquets and mixed gifts?

For a chocolate bouquet, keep it in a cool, shaded spot and enjoy the chocolates within a few days. If it comes with fresh flowers, separate them and put the flowers in water.

FAQ

How long does a fresh bouquet last?

Most bouquets last five to ten days with good care. Hardy flowers like carnations and lilies can last up to two weeks; tulips and hydrangeas are shorter.

Should I put sugar in flower water?

A little helps if you also add a few drops of bleach to stop bacteria. Use about a teaspoon of sugar per liter, or use the flower food sachet.

Is aircon good or bad for flowers?

A cool room helps flowers last longer, but keep the vase away from the vent itself. The direct cold, dry air dehydrates petals.

Why are my tulips bending?

Tulips keep growing in the vase and lean toward light. Turn the vase daily and trim the stems to keep them upright.
